Braves top Phillies 5–3 in Wild Card opener; Yankees and Red Sox meet tonight

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves took the first step toward the Division Series on Tuesday, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 5–3 in Game 1 of their best-of-three National League Wild Card Series at Truist Park.
Atlanta sent ace Chris Sale to the mound, while an injury-hit Philadelphia staff opened with Jesús Luzardo. The Phillies were also without Luis Arraez, who missed the Wild Card roster while recovering from an injury. Philadelphia went just 4–9 against Atlanta in the regular season.
Game 2 is Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. A Game 3, if needed, would be Thursday.

In the American League, the No. 6 Chicago White Sox visit the No. 3 Houston Astros, and the No. 5 Boston Red Sox face the No. 4 New York Yankees in the Bronx in a prime-time rivalry series starting at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. In the National League, the No. 5 Chicago Cubs play the No. 4 San Diego Padres beginning at 10 p.m. ET.
All four series use the same schedule: Game 2 on Wednesday and a deciding Game 3, if necessary, on Thursday. The winners advance to face the teams that earned first-round byes — the Dodgers and Brewers in the NL and the Guardians and Rays in the AL — with the Division Series opening this weekend.
